Dance Mogul Exclusive Interview…
Dance Mogul: How did you prepare for your performance at the 2024 BET Awards?
Luke Johnson: I had three days of rehearsals, and then the show.
Dance Mogul: What was it like to perform on such a prominent stage as the BET?
Luke Johnson: It was actually my first time performing at the BET Awards, which made it special. I had always wanted to be a part of my culture’s biggest night in entertainment, so I was very thankful to have that opportunity. Megan Thee Stallion is one of my favorite artists that I have worked with, so I was very excited to be back on stage dancing with her again.
Dance Mogul: How was your experience working with the choreographer and other dancers for the BET Awards performance?
Luke Johnson: I loved working with the choreographer and his team. They are people I have looked up to for years and continue to inspire me with their artistry. They are also such incredible people. It was also great to see and dance with so many friends. Some of the girls and I had danced with Megan for the last two years, so it was like a mini family reunion.
Dance Mogul: Which part of your performance are you most proud of and why?
Luke Johnson: I really enjoyed a section of choreography we did with Megan. The energy from her and the boys was electrifying.
Dance Mogul: How did you handle any nerves or pressure before and during the performance?
Luke Johnson: I felt nervous as we went down to prep to go on stage, but the minute we touched that stage, all nerves disappeared. All I felt was excitement and remembered to be present in the moment and enjoy every second.
Dance Mogul: Have you received any feedback from fans, peers, or mentors since the performance? If so, what has that feedback been like?
Luke Johnson: I heard great feedback from the performance. People told me it started the whole evening with a bang (opened the show).
Dance Mogul: How has this experience at the BET Awards contributed to your growth as a dancer?
Luke Johnson: I toured with Megan Thee Stallion in 2022 and 2023, so it was such an amazing feeling to come back a year later and perform with her and the girls on an evening that celebrates Black excellence.
Dance Mogul: Are there any upcoming projects or performances you’re particularly excited about?
Luke Johnson: I have a bunch of exciting projects coming up. Since the BETs, I have done some shows for Gwen Stefani, and in August, I am going to Japan to perform in Osaka and Tokyo with Christina Aguilera, which I’m super excited for.
Dance Mogul: What advice would you give to aspiring dancers who dream of performing on big stages like the BET Awards?
Luke Johnson: Find the love and passion for it, work hard, treat it like a business, and be willing to always learn. Be dedicated and understand the harder you work, the more you can achieve.
Dance Mogul: How do you stay inspired and creative in your dance journey?
Luke Johnson: Continuously learning new things and finding friends to dance with that make me smile and inspire me.
Dance Mogul: How do you hope your performance at the BET
wards will influence or inspire other dancers?
Luke Johnson: I’m originally from London, England, and I moved to Los Angeles in 2019. Anytime I get to do something for the first time (BETs), it’s always special to me and reminds me of the feelings I felt when I first moved here and why I chose to dance.
