Dance Mogul Magazine was introduced to Kendrick Tilghman, also known as “DJ 5 Starr”, The General at the 2013 Innovative Stem Conference. Mr. Tilghman shared his story of how he went from being a well-known DJ to wanting to take his career to another level. Mr. Tilghman shared that although the DJing business was good, it had its ups and downs; just like any other freelance job. The forever changing job opportunities and job market did not discourage Mr. Tilghman. He gave careful thought to his future and decided that the best thing that he could do was invest in his future. He decided to go to Morgan State University to study Engineering.
Mr. Tilghman saw the opportunities available for Engineers and decided that Engineering could help change his life. When we look at the marketplace today, there is always a need for new ideas and fresh young minds to bring them to the table; and Mr. Tilghman is surely doing just that.
Instead of Djing like he used to, he took the knowledge he learned about Science and Technology and created a new DJing Platform where he is now able to introduce S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to his work model. This new model has allowed Mr. Tilghman to create a new blueprint for up and coming students and potential DJ’s.
Mr. Tilghman has partnered with Dr. White and his Partners, the Founders of ISC — and is now working closely with them to help create a new pipeline to help introduce S.T.E.M. to youth. Mr. Tilghman feels you don’t have to give up what you love, you just have to find a way to help others and making a living at the same time. Mr. Tilghman can be seen conducting Leadership Workshops at Schools, or any Venue looking for new, creative and fresh ideas to help motivate the youth. Mr. Tilghman went from making a Thousand Dollars a week to Thousands in one day.
