StageMe and Dance Mogul Magazine are proud to announce the Judge’s Pick winner of the Waacking Originals #1 | Dance Video Contest.
Princess Lockeroo from NYC has been dancing for 9 years and her styles of dance are Waacking, Vouging, Locking, House, Jazz, Experimental, and little bit of Waving and Hip-Hop.
We had a chance to catch up with Lockeroo and here is what she had to say about her recent opportunity.
” I started Waacking 9 yrs ago when I was introduced to the NYC underground Dance scene (House Dance Conference 2004). M
I have a background in theater and I love performing and being on stage. I am currently developing shows that I intend to bring to Broadway someday. I’m very excited to be teaching Waacking at Broadway Dance Center and Peridance in NYC, and in countries across the globe. My dream is to continue to travel around the world teaching, performing and meeting so many wonderful & talented people that I can relate to so well.
I am thankful to all of my teachers, namely Tyrone Proctor. One of the Great things about waacking is that it has empowered so many people to be themselves. Whatever race, gender or sexual orientation people can use waacking as a form of self-expression and truly step into themselves. I want to continue to help waacking be understood as a tool for empowerment. I also want to support the gay community, which often goes un-recognized for their contributions to underground and mainstream culture. Like so many wonderful things, Waacking emerged from the gay community.
As a dancer, while having the utmost respect for the history and my elders I have never wanted to dance like anyone but myself. Along my journey with waacking I’ve developed a signature style that I call Propeller Waacking. Evolution in dance is what keeps dance alive and growing. Creativity is the heart of dance and that is what is most important to me.
Ultimately I dance because I enjoy it. Dancing in clubs it is my therapy and my meditation, performing is my drug and teaching is my passion. Love what you do and do what you love. It’s a guarantee that you will work harder than ever but feel like you’ve never worked a day in your life.
DanceMogulMagazine is the future of media. It’s an incredible source of history and documentation of what is currently making history. StageMe‘s online competitions provide amazing opportunities for dancers to compete from all parts of the world. This is great because not everyone may have the chance to travel to another country to compete. They both are excellent networks to be a part of, to be introduced to different dancers, styles and culture. Thank you.”
